Bruised, not beaten

I’m gonna call it, 2017 will be summed up as ‘challenging’ *and that’s me being nice. Like a playground bully hitting you when you’re down and gleefully snickering at your misfortune, this year has been anything but easy. Think plot twists leading to imminent doom that could most probably have been avoided by taking the door on the right instead of the left, just on a continuous loop of sorts leaving you feeling jaded and a tad confused in its aftermath.

Yet if you’re anything like me, you stubbornly refuse defeat, leopard crawling through the sandpit before getting smacked in the face by the swings, you keep getting up, convincing yourself it’s all just ‘character building’ and that things will inevitably get better (bless the inner optimist), whilst smiling politely at the opinion of others who really have no clue why you endure alla this in the first place.

If nothing else, and in the spirit of post-celebratory-survival-cupcake-contemplation, this year has taught me a great deal about myself and others. I now know struggling makes you selfish as yer body hunkers down in aid of self-preservation, leaving lil for additional human interaction, leading to amish aftermaths fuelled by strings of misunderstandings. I also know that the brain almost instantly forgets how hard it was once you’ve emerged from trying times and in some cases it’s best to keep what you’re going through, to yourself. Also, once one ball comes crashing down, the rest tend to follow suit – silly balls.

Turns out, the only thing we really need in life, is perspective, reminding us of the why and pointing towards all the good things amidst all the mountains of bad.

“Everything we hear is an opinion, not a fact. Everything we see is a perspective, not the truth.” – Marcus Aurelius
